Blackbird Caye is located approximately 25 miles off the coast of Belize City, within the Turneffe Atoll (17.305076, -87.804588). This site was selected as a reference area due to its relatively minimal exposure to anthropogenic activities. The seagrass beds are predominantly composed of Thalassia testudinum, with Syringodium filiforme as a pioneer species. These beds range in depth from 0.84 to 1.58 meters. Since monitoring began in 2022, an increase in Syringodium filiforme abundance and a decrease in Thalassia testudinum has been documented, along with observed nutrient imbalances in the Caye.
