Calabash Caye is situated approximately 25 miles off the coast of Belize City, within the Turneffe Atoll (17.281626, -87.811231). This site is considered impacted due to its proximity to developed areas, including a field station, a sustainability association station, and a coast guard station. The seagrass beds are predominantly composed of Thalassia testudinum, with Syringodium filiforme acting as a pioneer species. These beds are found at depths ranging from 1.73 to 2.42 meters. Monitoring efforts initiated in 2022 have documented an increase in the abundance of Syringodium filiforme and a decrease in Thalassia testudinum, alongside observed nutrient imbalances in the Caye.
